"Mr President, I also voted in favour of this agreement. Japan is the European Union’s second-largest trading partner, and this is important. Last year trade amounted to EUR 160 billion, and, as Europeans, we all know that Japan has a very strong presence in Europe, above all in our industrial markets.
It is also very important that the access of European firms to Japan’s markets is likewise facilitated. It is important to remember at all times that in trade policy the principle of reciprocity is a good thing. Right now the opportunity exists for the abolition of unnecessary tariffs. Europe, too, needs growth and consequently this free trade can be of benefit to both parties.
Of course, as European decision-makers we must always remember that since the European Union is a community of values, it is also important to strengthen links with Japan, which despite its cultural differences and background shares the common European values of democracy, human rights, freedom of opinion and the rule of law, and it would be good to be mindful of these values when we engage in trade."@en1
