"It was estimated that around 270 000 students will participate in Erasmus this year. However, with the budgetary problems there are many students intending to undertake this programme in the coming months who are rightly very worried about this situation. Faced with the prospect of a shortage of funds, universities and colleges are likely to reduce the number of places available, or they will reduce the level of grants available. This will hit students from disadvantaged backgrounds hardest. I appreciate the efforts being made by the Commission and my colleagues in Parliament to address this situation, but the fact remains that the shortfall in the Erasmus programme amounts to EUR 90 million. If an agreement to increase payments cannot be reached, the Erasmus programme will be at risk, and students, adults and vocational training will all be affected. It is clear that cuts have to come from somewhere, but the message that the EU sends in times of austerity cannot be that cuts to the EU budget will fall on the youth of Europe first – those on whom we are relying to be the foundation of future innovation, growth and development."@en1
