"The European Union and the United States are each other’s main trading partners, the two economies together accounting for about half of the global economic output and nearly a third of world trade flows, making it the largest economic relationship in the world. A free trade agreement would clearly enable us to consolidate our relationship. Studies are underway on both sides of the Atlantic, the final results of which should be made public by the end of the year.
At this stage, we must determine the conditions in which such an agreement could be mutually beneficial. That is why I voted in favour of this resolution, which highlights, in particular, the fact that this potential agreement must not be limited to the dismantling of tariff barriers. It also reiterates our concerns about the protection of geographical indications and public services and about data sharing. These concerns will only be dispelled through regular, detailed and open dialogue, both ahead of and during any negotiations."@en1
