"2 013 employees were made redundant by the German printing machinery firm Manroland AG, two of its subsidiaries and one of its suppliers as a result of growing international competition and changing technology. While it is always a tragedy to have a large workforce face redundancy and a sad indictment of the economic woes in which Europe finds itself, it is my belief that the EU has been part architect of the current situation through austerity and cuts that have killed consumer confidence and exacerbated the economic crisis. The EU should therefore not be in a position to pour money into its failings. The EU is an outdated model that is not fit for purpose in a globalised market place. National bodies should have full jurisdiction over trade and employment and forge partnerships with third countries to manage in times of crisis and provide for their workforce in both good and bad times. Member States such as the UK would have more financial aid to provide of their own accord without EU membership and without the burden of red tape that being a member of the European Union inevitably brings."@en1
