"The Netherlands applied for EGF aid for Zalco Aluminium Zeeland Company because authorities rightly assessed that the downturn in the European aluminium industry – which was sharp and sudden – could be attributed to declining demand in the construction and automotive sectors due to the global financial and economic crisis. According to the Commission, Zalco’s income suffered from this severe slowdown in aluminium production between 2008 and 2009, but also from the rise in energy costs between April 2010 and October 2011. As well as the usual package of personalised EGF supports, I was pleased to note that Zalco will implement measures to stimulate older workers to remain in the labour market. This is a recurring theme in a number of EU policy debates at present, so I think it is appropriate and important that Europe ‘put its money where its mouth is’ when it comes to keeping older Europeans working."@en1
