"The European air traffic management system is still fragmented, especially the organisation of airspace, technological equipment and air traffic control procedures. This has made flight operations inefficient and generated extra costs of EUR 1 million per year.
There has also been a considerable increase in the level of air traffic and this trend is expected to continue in the near future, especially in south-eastern Europe. The high level of air traffic can be managed safely and efficiently only if neighbouring states and suppliers of air navigation cooperate more closely in future. The creation of a Single European Sky is a basic tool for overcoming future challenges and should generate enough management capacity for the ever-increasing number of flights on the continent so as to reduce delays, increase safety and cost-efficiency, and lessen the impact on the environment."@en1
