lpv:translated text	"The European Year of Citizens in 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Union citizenship by the Treaty of Maastricht. I see this as an opportunity to promote participation by the citizens of the individual Member States in the process of European integration. All too often the citizens I represent, like those of other countries, lack awareness of the rights and opportunities attached to Union citizenship. The European Union has achieved many important objectives in the areas of protection of rights, health, and freedom of movement within the territory of the Member States, but I think Europe can play a still greater role in the daily lives of its citizens. Therefore, in order to pave the way to a new phase of European citizenship through effective exercise of citizens’ rights, I have voted in favour of the Commission’s proposal to proclaim 2013 the European Year of Citizens."@en1
