I support the proposal on the European Year of Citizens in 2013 to raise awareness amongst European citizens of the connection between Union citizenship and the right to freedom of movement. Of those questioned in the 27 EU Member States, 43 % claim familiarity with the term ‘citizen of the European Union’ and more than two thirds (67 %) are not well informed or not informed at all.
