"Madam President, the possibility to travel to other countries in Europe without stopping at a border is just one of the many rights and privileges afforded by Union citizenship. For most of us, they are already accepted as a matter of course, but many of our citizens are not aware that they are based on citizenship of the Union, which was introduced 20 years ago. It is therefore only right and proper, not to mention extremely important, to make it a priority to explain to our citizens what the European Union means and how it makes life easier for each and every one of us every day. This year, 2013, is the European Year of Citizens, and I hope to see many more initiatives in future which aim to bring the European Union closer to every citizen. Again, we are on the right track here, but we certainly have not reached our goal."@en1
