"Madam President, next year the Commission intends, among other activities, to continue implementing the climate and energy package. Indeed, 2013 will also see the transition to the third phase of the European Union’s emissions trading system. In this regard, the Commission is fighting for ever greater powers to interfere in national politics and with the competitiveness of individual economies. Neither Parliament nor the Member State governments should agree to this. The proposal for a decision on the timing of auctions of CO
allowances is just one of the actions put forward by the Commission that could plunge national economies even further into crisis, in particular countries such as Poland, whose industry is dependent on coal.
At the same time, I am hopeful that the Commission’s work programme for the next year will also include my compatriots’ proposal, registered as one of the first citizens’ initiatives, to suspend the climate and energy package that is so damaging to our part of Europe. We support this initiative and will view it as a test for the Commission and the Member States. The Commission has, after all, proposed that next year should be the European Year of Citizens."@en1
