"In the vote on the general budget of the European Union for the financial year 2013, I voted in favour of an amendment to eliminate subsidies for tobacco growing. I consider that maintaining this aid for tobacco production is inconsistent and incompatible with the Union’s health policy and with the objectives of reducing tobacco consumption, particularly among the young. The money saved could be used for the fight against smoking and the damaging effects of tobacco. I also voted in favour of a proposed amendment aimed at excluding, from the payment of premiums for the production of beef, bulls specifically bred to take part in bullfights. First, the breeding of these animals is basically motivated by objectives other than the production of beef, which is why it must be considered as falling outside the scope of this premium. Second, I consider that subsidising the breeding of these animals encourages and promotes a barbaric and degrading spectacle that is offensive to the values of today’s society."@en1
