"Mr President, since its inception, the Single European Sky project has been inextricably linked to the intention to liberalise the air transport sector. Rather than developing the sector according to a rationale of prioritising the general interest, the underlying vision is to bring airspace management into line with the interests of the major airlines and the monopolistic concentration under way in the sector. The arguments set out over the years in favour of the Single European Sky are secondary to this objective and are unfounded, whether with respect to safety, with respect to employment or with respect to environmental issues. All these matters can best be considered in the context of the public ownership and management of the sector rather than in the context of the liberalisation it is hoped to promote at all costs. Let us not forget the steps that have already been taken and those still to come in seeking greater coordination and better use of airspace while maintaining each Member State’s sovereignty over their national airspace, an essential issue in defending each country’s specific interests, whether in connection with commercial aviation or defence."@en1
