"Mr President, another year has gone by, and again it is time for us to fight over the European Union budget. As in previous years, I would like to call for responsible behaviour. We must aim for compromise, so that the budget can be adopted on time and properly before the end of this year. I am not an advocate of escalating the situation or of a budget war between institutions. Therefore, I do not support efforts to increase the European budget. As in previous years, the position of the Council, which represents our Member States, should be taken as a basis for compromise. These Member States are currently facing a difficult economic situation and cannot be forced to increase expenditure at EU level. It is good that the European Parliament is also now making an effort to look for savings in its economic management. I think there is always room for that here. Today, I read in the news that the European Commission is spending EUR 10 million on a project to track people in cyberspace. We are also aware that that we are financing tobacco-growing even though we know that smoking harms health. And we are also well aware that the European Parliament has two seats, which cost us EUR 200 million a year. We can save money in these areas – and also in many others, I am sure."@en1
