"Mr President, I share many of the views expressed by Mr Tannock on the shocking way in which Azerbaijan has pardoned and promoted Ramil Safarov.
However, I would like to explain the position of my group. We have kept our signature at the bottom of this compromise resolution, but we have one question: if Hungary agreed to return Mr Safarov to Azerbaijan, it seems that it must have received assurances that his sentence would still be served, and that has not been the case. Why is the Hungarian Government not strongly protesting today?
We have therefore called, in our resolution, for an amendment, which is very prudent with regard to the Hungarian Government, and which simply says that its attitude is a little surprising and foolhardy.
We will approve the resolution on the condition that this amendment is adopted, because I think that this is a game of three halves."@en1
