"Mr President, the news of the shooting of miners in South Africa that reached us in August was dreadful and shocking. How is it possible that a peaceful demonstration, a strike, can be broken up and the police open fire? If I had not seen live footage of the event, I at least might have had my doubts as to whether this news was true, because in recent times, the news from South Africa has been mainly positive. What, therefore, should be done? In my opinion, the EU must now call for a thorough investigation into the matter. The EU cannot just decide to demand that others do something: in my view, Baroness Ashton, as an expert on foreign affairs, must also provide assistance. The EU must provide assistance in the improvement of working conditions and to examine what could be done and how the EU could help."@en1
