"Mr President, there has been a concerted attempt in the international media to confuse this issue and to suggest that what is at question here is a complicated dispute between trade unions. There is nothing complicated here whatsoever.
Workers were engaged in a justified strike for higher wages and for better working conditions. They were mown down by the police, some of them shot in the back while running away, with the police acting as private security guards for the mines. The evidence suggests that this massacre was premeditated. The attempt to charge the miners’ colleagues with their murder, which has thankfully been dropped, indicates how far to the right the government of the African National Congress has been driven under Jacob Zuma.
The betrayal of those who made the revolution against apartheid is personified by Cyril Ramaphosa. This former leading member of the NUM, still a leading member of the ANC, sits on Lonmin’s board and is a major shareholder. Earlier this year, he bid ZAR 19.5 million for a prize buffalo, whereas the average South African earns around ZAR 26 000 per year. While a tiny elite have enriched themselves, grinding poverty and exploitation continue for the mass of black South Africans.
Next week will see the EU-South Africa Summit in Brussels, attended by President Zuma. I will be joining a solidarity action to show the support of the left and the workers’ movement in Europe with the South African miners."@en1
