"Several European Union Member States are facing a severe financial crisis, often caused by a lack of banking supervision which ended up leading to the adoption of support mechanisms by national governments. Greece, Ireland and Portugal have received increased amounts for supporting banking systems, demonstrating that there is a broader problem in the European banking sector and that it is urgent to take measures at European level. I therefore support the creation of a banking union where the European Central Bank is the only entity responsible for banking supervision, while transparency and accountability of such institutions vis-à-vis Parliament must be increased. Finally, I defend the existing proposals on requirements for own funds for the banking sector, the guarantee of deposits and the resolution on banking which aims to guarantee greater sustainability in banking activities in the medium and long term."@en1
