Tens of thousands more who flee from Syria into neighbouring countries do not register. According to UN estimates, more than 1.2 million people have been internally displaced within Syria and around 3 million are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. The crisis took a particularly brutal turn in August 2012 which resulted in a rapid escalation of these figures.
