Energy security also is of great significance for the EU’s strategic interests. The best way to ensure the reliability of energy supplies is via a functioning internal energy market and reduced external dependence, as the President of the Commission made clear in his State of the Union 2012 Address. The EU currently imports over 60% of its gas and over 80% of its oil. This tendency is increasing and is unsustainable. Accordingly, in addition to the need to reduce energy dependence, it is also crucial to diversify sources of energy supply.
