Signing the agreement on scientific and technological cooperation would serve the mutual interests of the EU and Algeria, as it would allow cooperation to continue and increase with this country in this area. Scientific research is a key contributory factor to creating the knowledge-based society and reducing unemployment against a backdrop of economic openness. Algeria needs to remain an important partner of the EU, and cooperation with this country could be extended to other areas as well. Signing this agreement would allow the EU to open the European Research Area to third countries. The EU’s wish must still be to promote technological progress not only within its own borders, but also in their immediate vicinity."@en1
