I hope and believe that the directive will be an important first step in solving the problems that have surrounded orphan works, particularly in the digital age in which we are now living. It has been hard to find a good balance between safeguarding the facility for libraries and archives to make literature available, including orphan works, and having reasonable rules to protect authors, who have nevertheless created these works that, with time, have come to be orphan works, but which can still give pleasure and hope and a belief in the future to readers of our time.
