"Mr President, Commissioner, the quality of European agricultural products is world class and excellent. To promote the sale of these high quality products and to raise consumer awareness, we need quality schemes for agricultural products and food.
I am very pleased with the report by my colleague, Ms García Pérez, who has achieved an excellent result in negotiations. I am also very pleased that the report now obliges the Commission to present a report to Parliament and to the Council on the case for a new local-farming and direct sales labelling scheme. This is a genuine step forward in the promotion of a short supply chain and locally produced food. Farmers will now be given a real opportunity to acquire added value for their products by means of the new labels. We nevertheless have to ensure that the new labelling scheme becomes suitable for all Member States. Restrictions that are too harsh will do nothing to encourage this excellent initiative. The scheme needs to take account, for example, of sparsely inhabited regions and long distances in some of our Member States."@en1
