"Mr President, first of all I would like to mention that during the referendum, on the day of the referendum, and immediately afterwards, the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) made no complaints regarding the fraud allegations. Only three weeks later were these allegations formulated, although it is clear that, despite what has been said here, the procedure for suspending the President of Romania, like the initiative of 2007, complied with the Constitution and the decisions of the Constitutional Court. Unfortunately, this time around, the European Commission adopted the position of President Băsescu’s political ally, instead of that of a neutral mediator in an election process, in a domestic political dispute, blaming, from the very beginning, both the government and the democratically elected Parliament.
Commissioner, I have not seen you in the debate on safeguarding democracy in Hungary, but I see that now you intend to make a completely groundless analogy between these two countries. For years, you have ignored the signs of the abuses committed by the PDL government. You have brought up two emergency ordinances of the Ponta government without saying a single word about the hundreds of emergency ordinances abusively issued by the PDL government. The double standard you are applying to the Romanian internal political groups is so obvious that it is no wonder the Romanian citizens’ confidence in the European Union has dropped by 10% in one month alone during this summer."@en1
