"This legislation is part of the reform of the common fisheries policy and will help boost the competitiveness of the industry, reduce the level of discards and introduce ‘eco-labelling’, so that consumers have more information on the sustainability of their fish. I also voted in favour of an amendment that would have given consumers more information on the fish they are buying, including the date it was caught, rather than just when it was landed. Under current rules, fish can be kept on ice on a fishing boat for several days before being landed, but be labelled with the same date as those caught and landed the same day. Research shows this is something that UK consumers want, and would have allowed them to tell how fresh their fish really is, as well as support smaller-scale fishing boats."@en1
