I have voted in favour of the measures against countries that authorise unsustainable fishing, and also the initial reports on the reform of the common fisheries policy (CFP), which include the new common organisation of the markets (CMO) regulation in fishery and aquaculture products.
This is the first time Parliament has been involved in the establishment of the new CFP as a colegislator. I agree with the aims of the CMO reform: to provide market incentives to support more sustainable production practices, to improve the market positioning of EU production, to help producers adapt to structural market changes and fluctuations, to enhance the market potential of EU products, and to improve governance.
The final report on the CMO contains the majority of my amendments and progress towards the sustainability of resources, competitiveness within the sector and improvement in consumer information. I regret there is no support for the inshore fishing industry, which operates on 24-hour trips, to promote its high-quality products by indicating the date of capture. The unique nature and special management of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, including shellfish, have been taken into account, as well as the development of product quality policies."@en1
