"In the first place, I would like to point out the importance of this own-initiative report, as it reflects Parliament’s opinion on the review of the common fisheries policy, which is currently under way. Indeed, it is expected that a vote on the regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the reform of the common fisheries policy will only be held next November in the Commission. However, the method of presenting ‘preliminary reports’, although it is more complex and potentially longer, seems to me to be sufficiently effective in a post-Lisbon Europe, where the search for consensus within and among institutions has become crucial in order for legislative documents to actually see the light of day within a reasonable timeframe. Having said that, I would like to congratulate the rapporteur on the excellent work that he has carried out, and I wish my colleague Ms Rodust, the rapporteur for the joint regulation, the best of luck with the complex piece of work that she has in her hands. As a personal note on this reform, although it does not form part of the Committee on Fisheries, I would simply like to highlight the absolute importance of pursuing the objective of achieving balance between the three dimensions of the common fisheries policy, namely its social, environmental and economic aspects, as well as the maintenance of support for fleet renewal and the pursuit of a more regionalised model for the management of the common fisheries policy."@en1
