"I support the report on strengthening the rights of the victims of crime across the EU. Since the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon in 2009 and the guidelines towards a European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, the protection of victims of any crime has been at the top of the EU’s agenda, as envisaged by the Stockholm Programme. A common and transparent justice system applicable in all EU Member States should rely on the victims’ need for support, including victims with specific needs or the so-called vulnerable victims, such as the victims of gender-based violence, children and persons with disabilities. In Europe more than one-fifth of all women have experienced physical violence at least once during their adult lives and more than one-tenth have suffered sexual violence involving the use of force. In this context, I believe it is crucial to criminalise all forms of gender-based violence and provide their victims with special measures for prevention, protection and redress."@en1
