"This week, the European Parliament adopted an important law safeguarding the fundamental rights of Europeans. It provides minimum protection for all victims of crime. The new act is significant, not just for EU citizens who are travelling, but also for those who are very vulnerable, for whom the law offers special protection. The act stresses the importance of protecting privacy in the case of children and, for example, the media will be prohibited from using images of victims. On the other hand, women who have suffered violence will be protected through a restriction on contact between the victim and the perpetrator. I am very pleased that concrete measures are being introduced in the European Union to safeguard fundamental rights. The European Union’s Charter of Fundamental Rights that entered into force two years or so ago safeguards the rights of citizens to the extent that EU law is applied, but it has not yet succeeded in safeguarding fundamental rights externally. The Equal Treatment Directive prohibiting all kinds of discrimination, which is in preparation, would provide good resources for that, but some Member States are opposed to its entry into force on account of the costs that might be incurred. The adoption of this directive would be an important next step towards an EU where everyone’s fundamental civic rights are protected."@en1
