"Mr President, when we talk about victims, we need to think primarily about those groups which encounter difficulties when it comes to demanding their rights. I am referring to minors, regardless of whether they are direct or indirect victims, to the elderly and to people with disabilities. I am also thinking about women’s rights and the victims of sexual abuse.
It is vital to establish standard rules for protecting victims. It is important to ensure that they are involved in judicial proceedings. Member States must provide information about the way and the conditions under which victims can access compensation. I also think that they must be able to access translation and interpretation services as a basic right. Adopting the draft directive may mark a step towards consolidating the area of freedom, security and justice."@en1
