"Mr President, I consider the adoption of the directive to be an important matter. I welcome the fact that it ensures minimum rules for all crime victims who are EU citizens, regardless of their nationality or of the place where the crime took place.
I particularly welcome, for example, the fact that the directive gives both victims and their families the right to all the information on their case and the state of proceedings in their mother tongue, that victims should be provided with support services such as accommodation, medical care, psychological and legal advice, and that this directive is to ensure protection of the privacy of victims, thus attempting to avoid repeat victimisation. This is particularly important for victims with specific needs, and above all children – who must be given special care during proceedings – or victims of sexual or domestic violence. In all cases of this kind, it is highly necessary to limit contact between the victim and the perpetrator.
In conclusion, I would like to say only that the actual method of applying these rules in the Member States is important, because an act of legislation is just the beginning. However, I would like to thank all parties involved for this act of legislation."@en1
