"Mr President, Commissioner, I would like to start by offering my sincere thanks to the Commission and its staff, as well as to the Council and its staff, for helping to make it possible during this process to negotiate out this final result. I would also like to say a special thank you to Parliament’s rapporteurs, Ms Parvanova and Ms Jiménez-Becerril Barrio, for really working hard and in such a splendid way to make this document mean as much as possible for the victims of crime. You fought for Parliament’s point of view with zeal and enthusiasm. Thank you once again for that.
With regard to the proposal itself, I am particularly pleased that it now contains a strong gender perspective. Examples of this include the fact that victims of crime who suffer gender-based violence are highlighted, the need for safe accommodation is established, and the right to legal information is clarified. The directive is therefore a step in the right direction when it comes to combating men’s violence against women.
I would, however, like to emphasise the fact that Parliament still believes that the Commission should present a proposal for an EU strategy for preventing violence against women. Only within the framework of such a coherent strategy will it be possible to take measures at EU level, effectively and forcefully, to combat all forms of violence against women in Europe."@en1
