"Madam President, the debt crisis troubling numerous Member States and uncertainty about the future of the euro area are, without doubt, affecting the Union’s image and calling its ability to play an essential role on the international stage into question. I do not therefore think that this is the time for grandiose but empty pronouncements. The Union needs to find its feet again and set realistic targets based on its actual abilities. The fact that this year’s European Parliament report on foreign and security policy calls quite explicitly for the Union to determine such strategic priorities is important. As Parliament’s rapporteur on enlargement, I should like to make a point of thanking the rapporteur, Mr Brok, for his constructive stand on enlargement issues. I should also like to express my satisfaction at the clear statement that the European Parliament unwaveringly supports the European prospects of every European state that respects the values of the Union and is prepared to fulfil the Copenhagen criteria. Enlargement is a huge success in the field of external action and must remain one of the most important tools in the Union’s toolbox."@en1
