"Madam President, the report on the structure of the European Union’s common foreign policy contains many clauses concerning a common security and defence policy. In addition, the report repeats calls for Member States to intensify cooperation on matters of defence and to implement the potential of the EU’s armaments policy. What is somewhat strange is that there is only one paragraph in the document that is devoted to cultural and religious dialogue. After all, foreign policy does not just mean armed intervention, but also an extension of the values on which the European Union is based. The clause about supporting dialogue and understanding between different religions and cultures which, as we read in the report, ‘should be an integral part of our external engagement with third countries’, does not go far enough in the context of mass persecutions of Christians around the world. In her speech, Baroness Ashton also omitted this issue. The European Union grew from Christian roots and should be more ambitious in approaching this issue, and should give it the weight it deserves."@en1
