"Madam President, Baroness Ashton, we know that the security challenges of our times are very different to those of the past: cyber crime, uncontrolled flows of migrants and refugees, international terrorism and the threat of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction are just a few examples. If we consider the Middle East, for example, we know that violence will not help to put an end to the dispute concerning the Iranian nuclear programme. If Israel were to attack the nuclear installations, the whole of the Middle East could descend into war and chaos.
If the EU is serious about keeping the peace, it must undeniably act as a mediator between the parties to the dispute. The consequences of a war in the region, where the anticipated refugee flows and the security of oil supply are concerned, for example, would undoubtedly be felt very strongly in Europe. Peace and stability in the region can only be achieved through general disarmament, and Brussels must therefore exert pressure on both sides to this aim. Of course, Israel’s right to exist should be beyond doubt, and Tehran has to lay its cards on the table with regard to its controversial nuclear programme."@en1
