"Madam President, Baroness Ashton, thank you for those words, Baroness Ashton, and it is true that one can see from your work that you have put in a great deal of effort and that this has begun to produce results, and this leads us to certain conclusions. The first conclusion, in my opinion, is that the banner of democracy will have some problems in the East this autumn, as elections will be taking place in Georgia and Ukraine. We have a great need for political support, and I have already written to you about this. We also need support for non-governmental organisations and for observer missions. If we want to be involved again in this great historical project in the East and say: ‘yes, it is possible for you to become European Union members’, then we must specify the criteria today that will be used to assess the elections. For this reason, the principal motto is democracy. The second issue, which is very difficult and which requires your personal involvement, is freedom, particularly in the context of religious freedom. We are very concerned by what is happening in Syria. We cannot allow the events in Syria to be part of a final solution for the issue of Eastern Christians, who have always lived there and where they have their home. You should have said something about this today. The third issue is energy, but there is no more time for this."@en1
