"Madam President, my congratulations to Mr Brok on an excellent job on a very difficult report. I hope that developments post-2013 will not disrupt the
at global level to any significant degree and justify the forecasts in the report and by the High Representative. Of course, due to time constraints, I cannot mention all the chapters in the report, but I would like to focus on the question of the Eastern Mediterranean and the southern neighbourhood, which are vital to the European Union. The trend in the West is to focus solely on economic matters and that harbours the risk of ignoring vital geopolitical aspects of the crisis. This has been noted by the important analyst Ian Lesser, who states that Greece is probably going through a crucial economic period and that we should look beyond the numbers. The geostrategic position and significance of Greece are hugely important, given that Greece’s neighbourhood, from the Balkans to the Near East, is entering a very unstable period, with unpredictable consequences in the immediate future. We therefore need to stay on our toes and prevent social tension in Greece. The use of natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean may, moreover, be a factor for security and stability in the Union and may help to achieve energy diversity. The Union needs to move in that direction and you, Lady Ashton, must demonstrate strong political will and fortitude, so that mining rights are granted within Member States’ exclusive economic zones as stipulated under international law."@en1
