Although measures are being taken to implement and widen the popularity of continuous training programmes for adults, I think that significant efforts need to be made in the area of professional retraining. Professions appear and disappear from one decade to the next, and there is a steady rise in the number of people unable to continue making a living because they are not keeping pace with scientific and technological developments. In addition to this, I think that raising the retirement age provides a further argument for launching substantial investments in extensive professional retraining and lifelong learning programmes across the whole of the EU."@en1
