"I voted in favour of this report because 83.1% of the female workforce is employed in the services sector. Sadly, certain stereotypes prevail in society, which cause the gender-specific division of labour. Some feel that there are female jobs and male jobs, and female jobs are usually associated with the home. Stereotypes also exist with the issue of flexibility and some still feel that caring for the home and family is women’s primary responsibility and that they should therefore accept working flexible hours, or doing temporary or casual work. On the other hand, it is crucial for women to reconcile professional and family life. The issue of equal pay is also very important because women in EU Member States now earn 17.1% less than men. Although current legal initiatives demand equal pay, the gap remains and progress on this issue is extremely slow. In its report ‘Gender Equality (2010)’, the European Commission emphasised that there are still inequalities in employment and expressed concern that the economic crisis is exacerbating the situation, as equality measures are being cut or eliminated."@en1
