A smooth cross-border exchange of information between different authorities in the Member States is essential in our efforts to complete the construction of the single market. The IMI system has proven to be a reliable and efficient instrument in the two areas in which it has already been operating, the Professional Qualifications Directive and the Services Directive, and the current proposal will allow the full potential of IMI to be exploited further, which will bring clear benefits to the citizens and the internal market. IMI is a flexible instrument that can be adjusted to the specific requirements of various legislative areas and its use in a new, consolidated form will not only allow for better data protection, but will also make it possible for competent authorities to communicate quicker or in a larger number of policy areas.
