lpv:translated text	"The Internal Market Information System (IMI) is an extremely important instrument for the internal market. When authorities cooperate via the IMI, it helps to ensure the correct implementation of internal market rules and increased mobility for citizens and companies in the EU. At a time of crisis, a well-functioning internal market really is the highway to more growth, competitiveness and jobs in Europe. The IMI system for administrative cooperation between national authorities has existed since 2008 but, up to now, it has lacked a legal framework. I welcome the fact that we have gathered existing practice together in a single text, which increases transparency and legal certainty. At the same time, we have simplified procedures and increased the protection of personal data. One of the things that I have worked hard to promote is the principle that data should not be stored in the system any longer than necessary, but that it must also be possible for a person to request access to his or her own data for special purposes relating to the provision of proof, even after a case has been closed. As the representative for the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), I have worked to ensure that we have a safe, cost-effective, flexible and user-friendly system. I particularly welcome the fact that it will be possible for the IMI system, which is currently used for the Services Directive and in relation to professional qualifications, to be extended in future to other areas of EU legislation, such as Solvit and e-commerce, on the basis of pilot projects run by the Commission."@en1
