"Atmospheric pollution caused by ships is currently estimated to be responsible for around 50 000 premature deaths in Europe per year. Sulphur and nitrogen oxides release into the air secondary particles harmful to health. Reducing emissions from ships will make it easier to achieve air quality standards in a number of Member States. By switching to more stringent sulphur limits, it would be possible to achieve significant health and environmental benefits in a cost-efficient way by implementing the 0.1% limit more widely than just in Europe’s existing Sulphur Emission Control Areas. For these reasons, and in view of the report by the Committee on Transport and Tourism, I voted for this report."@en1
