"During these tough economic times which EU Member States are enduring, it is inappropriate to burden farmers with additional administrative requirements. Farmers have enough challenges which they need to face without having other burdens on top of this. At the same time, however, food safety is one of the main issues of concern to Europe’s citizens.
The electronic identification of bovine animals makes it possible to obtain more reliable data, while also strengthening the traceability system. Member States will be able to decide whether the requirements will be applied on a compulsory basis in their territory. I believe that this is an excellent solution and I endorse the rapporteur’s approach and the solution tabled by the Commission; hence the reason I voted for this report."@en1
