"I support this first reading agreement which is an important step forward for the EU standardisation system. I particularly favour the introduction of rules aimed at facilitating the involvement of SMEs in standardisation activities, especially taking into account the fact that SMEs provide a vital contribution to the EU economy. Moreover, I commend the fact that the rapporteur has fully understood the importance of enhancing the degree to which both public authorities in Member States and social stakeholders participate in European standardisation, since I believe it is of the utmost importance that all interests be equally represented in such a relevant field. Also, I fully support the proposal of a consultation phase between the Commission, the ESOs and the relevant stakeholders prior to issuing the mandate, as it will considerably accelerate the standard-setting process while, at the same time, ensuring that the market relevance of the standard is maintained. I also favour the proposed performance-based simplification of the current EU funding system in support of standardisation, as I believe it will help reduce the irrational waste of resources caused by the current lump sums-based system."@en1
