"I voted in favour of this report. Solidarity is an essential component – in fact
essential component – of the common European asylum system (CEAS). It is a fundamental principle of Union law according to which the Member States must share both advantages and burdens in a fair and equitable manner. Without solidarity, Europe no longer has any meaning. This solidarity, however, must go hand in hand with responsibility, and the Member States must ensure that their asylum systems are able to meet the standards established by international and European law.
The provision of support for implementing the asylum procedures in a spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility must be seen as a way of helping the Member States to respect their obligation to provide international protection to those who need it, as well as to help third countries that receive the greatest number of refugees, with the aim of enhancing the common area of protection in general."@en1
