"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I should like to draw the attention of the Chamber to the case of Chiara Invernizzi, an Italian citizen who has been repudiated by her Muslim husband; he refuses to give his consent to expatriation under Islamic law. This is liable to become another case of clear violation of human rights, and specifically the fundamental individual and personal freedoms of women.
Chiara has been living in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for five years, having married a man from that area. The epilogue to her marriage has been tragic: having been repudiated last October, she has been prevented from returning to Italy. In addition, she ended up in court after having complained to the authorities of the violence and threats she had suffered at the hands of her former husband. He has accused her of improperly appropriating money and of adultery, an offence for which Islamic Sharia law imposes the death penalty.
I call for immediate action by Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to mobilise all possible channels of diplomatic mediation for the release and repatriation of this Italian citizen."@en1
