"China is among the EU’s major economic partners and one of the fastest developing countries, economically speaking, in the world. At the same time, there are known cases of human rights violations in this country. I believe that as Members of the European Parliament, an institution based on a foundation of fundamental rights, we have an obligation to emphasise our disapproval of acts that violate physical and spiritual integrity. The case in Shanxi province, which is the subject of today’s resolution, shows the brutal and merciless implementation by the Chinese authorities of their family planning policy. Needless to say, these actions bring to mind scenes from films or books where the action takes place in the Middle Ages. The European Union has taken on the role of promoter and defender of human rights. In the context of the legislative work aimed at strengthening the rights of children and women, I agree with the text of the resolution, and I think that the European Commission should raise this issue at the next bilateral meeting with China."@en1
