"Stray dogs are a huge problem in large parts of the EU. In the countries in the south in particular there are numerous dogs living on the streets. This is something that is dealt with differently from country to country – in some cases they are tolerated and sterilised and in others they are destroyed. In the countries in the east, such as Hungary, street dogs, as well as dogs that have become surplus to requirements, are destroyed in an animal slaughtering process in which most, as it is cheap, are brutally beaten to death. Another problem in the countries in the east is the dog trade. Many breeds, particularly those that are popular in the West, are bred on a large scale so that they can then be sold lucratively along the border. The consequence of this dog trade is a surplus of animals which, on the one hand, are unwanted and, on the other, are very sick. I abstained from voting, as I believe that the resolution pays too little attention to the animal trade, particularly that coming from the countries in the east. Dogs are produced there under the most appalling conditions in order to then sell them for a profit in the west. This is frequently carried out under the guise of animal welfare, but it is a most brutal trade, which can also result in animal diseases that have long been eradicated here being brought back in again."@en1
