"The EU loses hundreds of billions of euro every year as a result of the counterfeiting of various types of goods. The ACTA should enable more effective protection. Thanks in part to the interest of citizens, however, certain doubts have arisen about some of the instruments and procedures used in the protection of intellectual property. I am pleased that the Commission has asked the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg to interpret whether the provisions of this Agreement are in accordance with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU. That is to say, no economic interest should be elevated above basic human rights. In the Group of the European People’s Party, we have adopted a recommendation to abstain from voting in the sitting: most of us firmly believe that Parliament should wait for the opinion of the Court of Justice of the European Union."@en1
