"Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, on 21 June, the Committee on International Trade voted for the recommendation to reject ACTA, which received full support from me and all the Liberals in this committee. This made it clear that dignity, the freedom to exchange information, the right to privacy and the protection of personal data, as well as freedom of expression, are not empty words, but are recognised as being basic rights in the EU, which should be fully respected in order to strike a balance with the protection of intellectual property. We support the creation of a modern social pact which will be based on a sectoral approach with separate agreements, with each one of them focusing on specific types of intellectual property rights. I firmly believe that greater transparency also needs to be guaranteed during the negotiating process. This is why I call on the Commission to come up promptly with new initiatives going in this direction, guaranteeing the balance between civil rights and the right to protect intellectual property."@en1
