"I voted in favour of this report because it provides a comprehensive analysis of the strong and weak aspects of trade relations with the EU’s Eastern partners and outlines necessary developments in this field.
The EU has supported the progress of democracy and the market economy in partner countries in the East since the very beginning of their independence. Sustainable and transparent relations with these countries are in the utmost interest of the EU, and DCFTAs are an appropriate tool to achieve it.
Still, good implementation remains the challenge. Further progress has to be merit-driven. I share the rapporteur’s concerns about competition with Russia in the region. The EU should strengthen partnership relations with Russia and not offer two alternative paths for the eastern neighbourhood partners.
I regret that Belarus consistently fails to be involved in European integration. I hope that the EU will find new instruments and approaches to initiate political change in the country and its rapprochement towards EU standards."@en1
